BMW abandons what it fought so hard to keep

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76402

BMW Sauber has abandoned its Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) for good, because it thinks it can improve its car performance more without the hybrid technology.

Although the Hinwil-based outfit was alone in vetoing a bid last year to abandon KERS in Formula 1 because it felt the technology was vital for the sport, it confirmed at Silverstone on Saturday that it was shelving its system.

The team only raced with KERS in the first four races of the season, and has not run it since the Bahrain Grand Prix after choosing to instead focus on aerodynamic developments on its car that were introduced in Spain.

This is a major blow for KERS isnt it, you can see the original idea behind it but the issue with weight has proved to much, it's a shame by the time Williams get there system going it will probably be banned due to cost..

KERS is a technology that Max forced the teams into.  If KERS was ever to be beneficial, it needs to be allowed but not forced, when it is a practical benefit the teams will use it.  Turbo engines were around for a number of years before they became reliable and effective.

6 seconds a lap doesn't give enough benefit to combat the weight and aero issues it causes. The only advantage it's given teams is as a quick boost off some start lines and to help keep cars behind them.

No surprises really. The cons out weight the pros.

My understanding of the rules pertaining to the systems was they could not provide any benefit until the car exceeds 100 KPH.  Cars do not get any direct benefit at the 'start', they may be able to get an assist for that last push into turn 1.

And both Ferraris have consistantly been the best starters where they have used it. But as Stefano says, if they spent as much on the car as they had on the KERS they'd have a car as good as Red Bull.

You cannot mandate development of technology....just allow for the use of the technology if someone develops it into something practical.

Agreed! But you only have to look at the stupid limits on the engines to know that you cant tinker with anything. Even the angle is set in stone. If I didn't know any better I'd swear that Max only liked boring old missionary with nothing kinky at all.
