Teams Breakaway Confirmed
Quote
The Formula One Teams' Association announced on Thursday night that it is setting up a breakaway championship.
Following a four hour meeting at Renault's Enstone factory, the eight members of FOTA said it had grown frustrated with the FIA's stance against it and that it had no option but to create its own championship.
"The teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 World Championship," said a statement.
"These teams therefore have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new Championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners. This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders.
"The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series."
if this doesn't shake Bernie and Max up then nothing will

Re: Teams Breakaway Confirmed
Max has to resign today or F1 and the FIA are effectively dead. CVC will find that it's prized asset is virtually worthless and every broadcaster, circuit owner and even the new 2010 teams will be looking at their contracts and realising that this is not what they signed up for.
The decision from Lola to withdraw from the standby list looks even more suspicious now. Could they be lining up to join the rebels? Or have they been offered the chance to build the chassis for a support series assuming they don't just get into bed with MOTO GP. But after listening to David Croft it sounds like they plan on going it alone, they have a list of circuits to go racing.

The FIA aren't dead, they are a regulatory organisation.
Max Mosley is gonna have to walk though, he has lost all credibility.
CVC and the poison one are in deep shit though. Good enough for them.

Re: Teams Breakaway Confirmed
Will Bernie be bothered though? He's always held the teams with contempt, and he's made his billions now out of F1... realisticly he'll be dead within 10 years, prehaps he'll now take the oportunity to hand the reigns over and walk away as well.
Clearly everyone has milked this once great sport for all its worth, and now they all want to play politics. They should have just forced Max out after his 'spanky' episode and this would all have been avoided.

Re: Teams Breakaway Confirmed
Tomorrow when the FIA announce the 2010 entry list, still expect to see Ferrari and the two Redbull teams on that list... yet more legal wrangles. And if the FIA can indeed tie Ferrari to the sport, it could be a quick easy way to simply cut out the car manufacturers who will be left looking in...

No but after ruining another premium series their credibility is dead.
How much will they earn from their super licence scam in 2010?

Re: Teams Breakaway Confirmed
I won't believe it until I see it... Let's be real doesn't F1 have exclusive rights with some circuits? Then again this could be a blessing in disguise for a lot of circuits as Bernie has been sticking it to them for years... So what remains to be seen is whether or not this new series can get some of the more famous venues behind them... SPA for example, have a GP back in the US, can they get Suzuka? What about Monaco?
If this breakaway really does happen, what does that do to the current TV contracts? Or the new F1 teams that were looking to come on board?

Re: Teams Breakaway Confirmed
Any circuit wishing to run a FOTA race next year would have a fairly strong argument for setting aside the exclusivity clause in their contract under the restraint of trade doctrine. There is nothing to stop Monza, for example, hosting both an FIA event and a FOTA event, and if the FIA tried to sue to stop them...well, they'd lose.

Re: Teams Breakaway Confirmed
I hope this does stick and the break away happens, i dont think they'll have a problem getting tracks for a series, all they have to do is pick up all the great F1 tracks that Bernie has cast for the money making middle east bullshit that now fill the current calendar..

Motorsport's ruling body, the FIA, has announced it will be launching legal action against the Formula 1 teams trying to set up a breakaway championship.
The Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) announced on Thursday night that, after failing to reach an agreement with the FIA, will start its own series next year.
But the governing body has responded to FOTA with a legal threat, saying the teams, and Ferrari in particular, have binding commitments that they cannot break.
The FIA also said that it will delay the publication of the 2010 entry list, expected tomorrow.
"The FIA's lawyers have now examined the FOTA threat to begin a breakaway series," said the FIA in a statement.
"
The actions of FOTA as a whole, and Ferrari in particular, amount to serious violations of law including wilful interference with contractual relations, direct breaches of Ferrari's legal obligations and a grave violation of competition law
.
"The FIA will be issuing legal proceedings without delay.
"Preparations for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship continue but publication of the final 2010 entry list will be put on hold while the FIA asserts its legal rights."

Re: Teams Breakaway Confirmed
Please excuse my ignorance... What legal ground does the FIA have against Ferrari, I would have thought it would be FOM and Bernie that would have a legal issue. As the governing body can the FIA really get involved in who wants to be in the sport or not... Lots of teams have bowed out of F1 and I saw no legal action against them.
Max is pissing in the wind I believe, I've always said that the teams themselves spend all the money and get hardly any of the benefit. Bernie charges outrages prices for people to host a grandprix. If FOTA is serious this would be a welcome to a lot of people. F1 could become a little more fan friendly and maybe a bit less costly.
