Villeneuve to return to F1?

Quote
Jacques Villeneuve has admitted that he wouldn't mind a return to Formula One in time for next year's Championship.

In recent weeks, former World Champion Villeneuve, who has been trying to make a breakthrough in NASCAR, has been rumoured to want a return to Formla One. And the French-Canadian has now confirmed that the rumours.

"I'm looking at getting back into racing," he told Autosport.

"It's not something I've worked on actively. Looking at the cars now and the Championship it would be fun, but I have been much more active working on NASCAR.

"I live in Canada, but when you see the F1 cars with slicks and no refuelling next year it is everything I've asked for over the years, so there is a little moment where you think - wouldn't it be great, but that is it.

"If there was an opportunity I would not spit on it, the cars are everything I wanted them to be to drive, so it would be fun, and honestly it is a little bit boring right now - nobody says anything apart from the political aspect, so it looks like it could be fun.

"I was talking with [former race engineer] Jock [Clear] and his comments were that the cars would suit me. So if there was an opportunity it would be a lot easier to say yes than no, purely because I love driving, I love racing and these are amazing cars."

Hmm.. his stint with Renault and then Sauber was pretty poor... though he reckons the cars would suit him better now. Would USGP take on a Canadian?

Re: Villeneuve to return to F1?

I don't think he was too bad once he got going at Sauber which became BMW. His pace wasn't massively different from Massa and Heidfeld from what I remember. I seem to remember Massa doing slightly better than him, and there was some debate on the old forum about who was better out of Villeneuve and Heidfeld.

Re: Villeneuve to return to F1?

Rubens is in his late thirties isn't he? And still keeping Jensen honest. I don't see why it wouldn't be worth a test or two to see his relative pace.

Re: Villeneuve to return to F1?

A year or 2 at USGPE would be good for both JV and USGPE

They need an experienced driver and one that is known to the American market and JV certainly is having been Indy500 winner and CART champion so JV and a rookie would be a good line up

Re: Villeneuve to return to F1?

I always liked him but is now really a good time to be thinking of making a 'come back'?

Yes but Rubens is still in F1. JV is out of practice and over the hill. Plus he's not even a yank.

In that case the younger Montoya also fits the bill.

Re: Villeneuve to return to F1?

Montoya has gone on record as saying he would never return to F1 though, where'as Jacques is apparently courting the idea...

Montoys's wage demands would be out of reach of a start up like USGPE

Jacques being old and out of the game for some time will likely be a cheaper option

Re: Villeneuve to return to F1?

You didn't I just wanted to add that in there as I can't see the point of having an American team based in the US that has non American drivers when they have plenty of decent drivers to partner the obvious money grabbing option of Danica.

I'm betting it's someone with a dad who was a famous driver who can pull in a fair amount of sponsorship money.

--------------

He was on the grid so he is deffinitely sniffing around, making it known he's available and willing to take up a drive. Brundle mocked him by claiming, like him, he was too old and out of shape for F1.

Villeneueve? Return? LOLOLOLOL!
I did actually laugh when I saw that interview, I immediately put the serious disapointed face on afterwards though.
The one driver we DONT need back is Jacques...

Even Alex Yoong would be a better return.

Re: Villeneuve to return to F1?

I think he's contemplating it as Rubinho is at the front every god damn fortnight !!

and that F1 is not about the big three anymore..

I think he would be a good fit for bmw as they are a mess with their drivers
