iPad

Aaron was talking about this in the Shoutbox, but I feel it's worthy of a thread here.

Basically, I'm a bit of an Apple fanboy these days. In early 2009 we got an iMac, I got a MacBook and an iPhone. All three items are great IMO and far better than the equivalent products I had used before.

But I really don't see much point in this new 'tablet' thing.... admittedly I haven't had time to read much about it but from what I have seen and heard on the news it's pretty much just a large iPod Touch/iPhone !?

Surely the screen with get scratched to buggery if it's not stored in a suitable case, and in which case why not just not bother and get a MacBook for about the same price? Tbh, I find the iPhone is big enough for web-browsing on-the-go really...

Anyway, maybe I'm wrong and it's amazing.... but what do you guys think? anyone

Re: iPad

Yup, it looks like a bit of laziness from Apple I'd reckon. I love my iPhone, think it's years ahead of most other tech, but like I said in the shoutbox last night, the 'non scratch screeb' scratches far too easily, so this tablet will suffer the same problem. Also, the 3 options for memory only go up to  64Gig, and I don't know who would bother with the 16gig. As TD says, it's pointless. The iPhone is handy as you can carry it around with you, and web browsing on it is already perfect. They are basicaly taking a step back by making something bigger again, without adding anything! It's just a big inconvenient iPod touch. Now if it were on foldable fabric or something (which will no doubt arrive in future) then it would be worth sitting up and raking notice of.

Still, they'll probably sell shitloads.

Re: iPad

Just read an article with some guy getting all moist at the thought of 'being able to touch the screen to minipulate items'... The iPhone/touch does this anyway, it's not a new feature. My 9month old HP desktop is touchscreen and is excellent. Some things don't need scaled down, not everything needs to fit in your bag...

Re: iPad

it reminds me of this

The iPad is there answer to a netbook/kindle. It'll win a lot of fans just as an iTurd would. But it's ludicrously expensive. But that doesn't bother the iFans.

Re: iPad

Not practical as a laptop at home.

Not practical as a mobile device outside.

So what is the point? Catering for the market of fat-fingered consumers who can't use an iPod Touch? It's very much niche stuff.

I don't care about it and I doubt I will ever get one. It will put the Kindle out of business.

Re: iPad

I will definitely get one

My laptop is too big and bulky to carry about (19" screen) so an iPad will be ideal for me for when I am on trains or am in bed (again laptop too heavy to comfortably use in bed)

I love my iPhone but the battery life is not sufficient for most journeys I make so will 100% be getting the iPad

Re: iPad

You not gonna wait til the next version which will have a built in camera etc? Apple have a habit of dripfeeding features.

I've got the next gen ipad, with a built in camera, ability to make calls, SMS, and mobile Internet, it's also been shrunk. I call it iPhone 3gs

Already got camera on iphone which does the trick really

Plus the 4.0 software update for the iphone will also be on the ipad so that should enable some features they couldn't show on the 3.2 OS the other night such as hopefully multi tasking  Thumb

Re: iPad

I was wondering what use it would be.

On the other hand my mobile contract is due up march and am considering an iphone (i had a nokia 5800 xpress - hated the touch screen) but thinking i may adapt to it over time. the apps for iphone are amazing! How long is the battery life on it?

Re: iPad

iPhone battery life is pretty decent, be interesting to see if the battery holds up for several years though. I admit I have to charge mine every night, but it gets used lots, as it's superb. I would recommend one to any tech savvy person. You'll be amazed.

I agree, iPhone is amazing. I wonder how much better the new one will be when it comes out this Spring though? The 3GS was only a small improvement over the 3G tbh, and it certainly wasn't worth upgrading for. Hopefully the next generation iPhone will have at least a 5mp camera, a decent camcorder and multi-tasking.  anyone

mp's are meaningless when it comes to cameras Ben it is optics and lens that count, picture quality is better with 5mp Nokia's than it is 8mp Samsung'd because they use Carl Zeiss optics whereas Samsung use cheap generic shit

The 3GS will be just as good as the new iphone tbh as 3GS will handle the 4.0 software update, any changes in the new iphone will be minor I think, if they are major I can always stick my 3GS on eBay and get a 4G
